Perched on a hill bounded by Brooms Road, St Michael's Street and Craigs Road, so pretty handy for the town centre, is the Larchfield estate. Consisting of mainly ex-council houses (some are still council houses), it is made up mainly of Detached houses, with some 2, 3 and 4 storey flats, it's position on a hill gives these houses some of the best views in Dumfries. It used to be dominated by the large Cresswell Maternity Hospital, but this was closed in 2002 and has now been demolished and is due to have houses built on it (as at Nov 2004). There is a Primary School as well as St. Joseph's College, which used to be the Roman Catholic Secondary School for Dumfries but which is now open to anyone. It also has it's own local shops, take aways etc., and being so handy for the town centre, you don't have far to go for local facilities. The style of house means you'll pick them up cheaper than say Georgetown, but my mother-in-law lives in one of the flat roofed terraced houses, and believe me, there's not much wrong with the houses or the area.
